Women are strong, powerful and smart. Women hold many notable positions in society. In their professional lives they are, among other things, scholars, scientists, activists, programmers, teachers, chefs, nurses, CEOs and entrepreneurs. In their personal lives they may be mothers, sisters, aunts, wives and grandmothers.

Women don’t get enough credit for all that they do. In particular men are not supporting women when women need it most. So here are five ways during and after Women’s History Month to show women how much we love, cherish and respect them.

1. Disrupt discrimination

Despite all the steps taken over the last 50 years to make the USA more inclusive, lots of work is still necessary. Women across all races and ethnicities have been and continue face discrimination.

One common type is sexual harassment. It is believed that at least one-third of women in the United States experience some form of sexual harassment. However, women have to deal with other types of discrimination. For example, one study reported that 56 percent of women believe that where they live, women are paid less than men for equal work.

Educate yourselves about the different types of discrimination. Learn how to identify them and different ways to disrupt them. Disrupting discriminator acts involves speaking up and  creating safespaces. Also consider supporting organizations that fight against discrimination.

2. Listen to Women

Whether it is your mom, sister, colleague or some other woman, listen to them when they are speaking. If you love them, rather that assume that you know what they are feeling or what they want to say, (a) listen carefully, (b) not respond immediately, (c) ask thoughtful questions and (4) proceed accordingly.

3. Support Women in Crisis

If a woman ever comes to you with a major life issue, stop what ever you are doing (as soon as feasibly possible), and listen. Believe her. Acknowledge her thoughts and emotions. Then work with her to figure our how you can best support her.

4. Spend with Small Women Owned Businesses

There are over 12.3 million women owned businesses in the US. In 2018, 1,821 new women owned businesses were launched every day. Women of color founded 64 percent of those new businesses.

One study reported that American women start businesses to structure their work around their family’s needs. Another study reported that 55 percent of American women entrepreneurs started or wanted to start their own business to obtain work-life balance.

Show women owned businesses some love. Make a commitment to seek out and use women owned business. By supporting women owned businesses, we can increase the likelihood that talented women, some of whom abandoned their career in corporate America, realize their dreams.

5. Help a New Mom

Did you know that new moms reportedly spend only 90 minutes a day on average in the company of other adults? Needless to say, new moms can benefit from the support and company of others. Not sure what actions you can take to show new moms that you love them? Try, calling and seeing how she is doing, offering to watch the baby, and volunteering to complete chores run errands for them
